The Beginning
Well, I just acquired a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrerra. It needs some serious work, but I believe I am the man for the job. I picked it up last night and this morning did a walk around. These are the deficiencies I noticed immediately:
- The hood badge needs to be replaced
- The forward decklid is bubbling and will probably need replacing
- Left rear fender has a gouge that will probably necessitate replacement
- Tailpipe rusted
- Chip over left rear tail light
- Whale tail desperately needs a touch-up
- 3rd brake light needs touch-up
- Left license plate light missing
- Trim around Targa logo chipped
- Chip in front of right side door
- oxygen sensor needs to be replaced
- A/C belt cracked and worn
- Dry rot on weather seals around hood
- significant rust inside right side door
- right side door handle INOP
- right side inner door trim tearing away
- parking brake INOP (probably just needs to be adjusted)
- headlight rings missing (I found them...they just were not on the headlights)
- deck lid pistons very weak
- hood loose on right side
- cab light falls down
- pull knob for gas tank needs to be replaced
- brake pad light on (not sure if this is a short or the brake pads need to be replaced)
- buzzer when key left in ignition INOP
- Key light INOP
- driver seat torn
All that was from a quick walk-around. This is only the beginning. I am going to have it inspected in detail in the near future by a mechanic...to see what condition the powertrain, engine, exhaust, and ignition system is in.
The first of many projects to follow began with me trying to get the key light to work...I failed. Near future projects:
- rebuild front brake calipers
- paint calipers
- detail the car and remove the scratches
If you have not figured out...I will be performing all the work on this car. It is my project car. Stay tuned.

2 Comments:
Congratulations on 911 ownership. I have a 1989 Carrera.
I'll toss in a few comments in [brackets].
- The hood badge needs to be replaced [Pelican Parts has silver ones, which some prefer to the standard gold]
- The forward decklid is bubbling and will probably need replacing [you mean repainting not actually replacing, I suppose]
- Left rear fender has a gouge that will probably necessitate replacement [ditto]
- Tailpipe rusted [if the rest of the muffler is good, why not remove it, have a muffler shop weld on a new tip, and repaint or send out for a JetHot coating]
- A/C belt cracked and worn [replace the fan belt too, that is much more critical, and never drive the 911 for even 60 seconds if the fan belt breaks, the motor will overheat almost immediately and can be damaged]
- deck lid pistons very weak [since it is a Targa, I'm guessing it did not originally have the tail, and may thus have only a single decklid gas strut, decklids with tails need two struts to stay up]
- driver seat torn [some prefer aftermarket seats]
- paint calipers [or powdercoat, more durable]
- detail the car and remove the scratches [you're doing a great job!]
For mechanical work, get both the "101 Projects" book and the Bentley manual.
See you on the PP BBS!

Yeah, I already have both manuals, and plan initially to find the bigger internal problems and fix those before focusing on teh external visual stuff.
